Thursday 3rd July 2008 WSOP main event begins today
The prestigious main event of the World Series of Poker (WSOP) starts today with around 12,000 players expected to enter.
Along with a large number of amateurs looking to make their name, pokers pros such as Phil Ivey and Daniel Negreanu will also be entering in the hope that they will pick up another WSOP bracelet.
This year the first prize money in the event is predicted to be between $8 million (£4 million) and $10 million.
Event 54 will have a $10,000 buy-in and there will be no opportunity to re-buy for those who go out of the no-limit Texas hold'em tournament.
The televised final table will be held in November this year in order to give players who reach the last nine the opportunity to train and gain sponsorship.
Last year's event was won by Jerry Yang who took home $8.2 million after spending nearly 16 hours at the final table.
