Gamblers beg in vain to be banned

A couple with a gambling addiction have begged to be banned from every licensed club and hotel in South Australia, but the Independent Gambling Authority has refused.

Pokie addicts Gordon and Tricia Shaw have already been barred from 184 venues – on their own volition – but want to be banned from all of the state's 600 gaming machine venues.

The Shaws, suffer depressive disorders and are receiving counselling, estimate they have lost about $175,000, including their home, to poker machines over eight years.

'We want statewide barring to help us break the addiction and rebuild our lives,' Mr Shaw said yesterday.

Independent Gambling Authority director Robert Chappell said the Shaws' application had been rejected because 'the material provided did not satisfy the board that the (barring) orders should be widened'.

The IGA has recommended a mandatory smartcard system to track gamblers' poker machine habits and impose limits on spending but the State Government has rejected the proposal, saying no benefit has been proved.

Chappell added, 'The Shaws' personal circumstances are very complex and the IGA . . . will consider any further request.”
