Wednesday 11th October 2006 Free Poker Site Hopes to Cash-in on US Gaming Legislation
Poker site developers hope to entice poker-playing victims of the recent US prohibition legislation to their site, offering free poker and ensuring it won’t become a victim of the new bill.
The site, Gpokr.com, launched in June 2006 and has servers in Dallas, but runs out of Toronto, Canada. Visitors can play poker without having to download software first and since credit cards, money drafts or bank transactions are not required, no laws or rules are being broken.
“Gpokr.com is one of the first internet applications based on Google’s new Web Toolkit technology,” said developer Ryan Dewsbury. “In three months it has attracted a modest membership of around 12,000 players.'
The site focuses on the social and community aspect of Texas Hold’em with a chat-board below each table where players can talk about their hands, tease one another or complain about their spouses.
“Even without the risk of losing money, we have created a poker site that is very competitive and puts an emphasis on compiling chips,” said Dewsbury. “For example, we compile top ten lists of the best. There are also a lot of statistics built around your performance and your rank can rise or fall depending on how well you play.”
