Monday 7th August 2006 Hellmuth Laments WSOP Main Event Misfortune
Nine-time World Series of Poker (WSOP) champion and author Phil Hellmuth has described his surprise at his elimination from the esteemed Main Event at this year’s WSOP event.
“After recently winning my 10th WSOP bracelet in a no-limit Hold’em event, I fancied my chances in the Main Event,” said Hellmuth, who was knocked out on the first day, in an article published at LJWorld.com. “I had some serious momentum, I had made the money in five Hold’em tournaments, and I knew that I was at the top of my game.”
But in a strange turn of events, Hellmuth ended up with A-Q against his opponent’s 7-7, an all too familiar position for the poker pro.
“In last year’s Main Event I had A-Q versus 7-7, with me sitting in the five seat, and my opponent sitting in the six seat,” explains Hellmuth. “Same deal this year, and that is some serious deja vu. Just not the kind of deja vu I like!”
“I only hope that my next article talks about me winning bracelet number 11!” continued Hellmuth optimistically.
