Tuesday 16th January 2007 Online Gambling Costs UK Business £300 Million
UK firms are losing more than £300 million in lost productivity due to online gambling at work, a survey has suggested.
Researchers from consultancy firm Morse, who commissioned the survey, claimed that almost 30 percent of British office workers had either placed a bet online whilst at work or knew someone who had.
664 office workers across the country were interviewed and some interesting statistics were uncovered.
For instance, gamblers from Northern England constituted the majority of those betting at work, followed by gamblers from the South. Midlanders brought up the rear with the least gambling activity.
Bets were most often placed on the National Lottery, but football bets and online poker increasingly contributed to overall gambling online.
Philip Wicks from Morse said, “A lot of employees have unmonitored access to the internet at work. This, together with the rise of Internet poker and gambling sites, means that people are tempted to have a ‘quick’ bet online.”
