Tuesday 27th April 2004 The Sun and Victor Chandler team up
Victor Chandler, one of the most respected names in gambling, has teamed up with The Sun, the UK’s most popular (and, in some quarters, most despised) tabloids to offer slightly risqué casino and poker rooms. The casino offers ‘page 3’ imagery (after the page in the paper where semi-naked pneumatic young women are artistically displayed) alongside the games. The casinos are no-download, Flash-based affairs, and can be found at www. page3casino.co.uk and www.page3poker.co.uk.
'This is the first time the most famous newspaper page in the world has lent its name to a commercial venture of this type, and the fit between Page 3 and a casino environment is a natural one,' according to Page 3 Business Development Manager, Amy Copeland.
The synthesis of two types of ‘adult’ content could be a winner, as Playboy has proved. However, Uber-pornstar Jenna Jameson’s online site was short lived – a matter of months – but the Sun’s marketing clout and database might just make this one a winning synthesis of silicon chips and silicon breasts.
Except, perhaps, in certain parts of the UK, notably Liverpool. The newspaper’s circulation still hasn’t recovered in Liverpool, 15 years after the newspaper printed lies about the conduct of Liverpool football fans during the Hillsborough tragedy.
