Wednesday 31st October 2007 Top lawyer plans poker legalisation battle
A legendary American lawyer has launched an effort to legitimise the game of poker as one based on skill rather than chance.
Charles Nesson, of Harvard Law School, made his name defending former State Department official Daniel Ellsberg for leaking the Pentagon Papers.
Now Mr Nesson has formed the Global Poker Strategic Thinking Society to lobby the government to ease the rules shackling playing the game of poker.
Mr Nesson told the Associated Press: "I'd like to legitimate poker as an educational instrument.
"It's a great way to learn and practice the skills of seeing what things look like from another person's point of view."
In games of chance one is not using one's brain, Mr Nesson added, while in poker "you learn to be smart" and "you learn to win".
Now the lawyer is also planning on running academic seminars of the art of poker for children.
